Fort Wayne, IN — FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Bishop Dwenger opened its 2026 football season with one of the wildest finishes imaginable, outlasting Indianapolis Roncalli 15-14 in triple overtime Friday night at Shields Field. The matchup was a rematch of last year's Class 4A state championship, but this time the Saints needed every ounce of resilience they had to come away with the victory. Neither team could find the end zone during regulation. The defenses dominated from the opening kickoff, sending the game into overtime with the scoreboard still showing 0-0. The deadlock continued into the extra periods, with both teams trading crucial defensive stops and making the most of every possession. Roncalli eventually appeared to have seized control when quarterback Kallen Stahley scored during the second overtime, putting the Royals in position to finish off the upset. Instead, Dwenger answered. The Saints kept the game alive and forced a decisive third overtime, where the drama reached its peak. Dwenger elected to go for two after scoring in the third overtime rather than kick the extra point. The Saints converted the two-point attempt as #23 Kolyn Campell stretched across the goal line, giving them a 15-14 advantage and the victory. It was a fitting conclusion to a game in which neither offense could break through for nearly four full quarters. But in the end, Dwenger made the one play it needed to make. The victory gives the Saints a 1-0 start to the 2026 season and provides an early measure of redemption against a Roncalli program that defeated Dwenger 3-0 in the teams' regular-season meeting last year before the Saints eventually defeated the Royals 36-29 in the 2025 Class 4A state championship game. For Roncalli, the loss drops the Royals to 0-1, despite a defensive performance that held Dwenger scoreless through regulation and kept the game within a single possession throughout overtime. Dwenger will look to carry the momentum into Week 2 when the Saints travel to Toledo to face St. Francis de Sales on Friday, Aug. 28. Roncalli returns home that night to take on Franklin Central. For a season opener, it would be hard to script much better — or much more dramatic — than Bishop Dwenger 15, Roncalli 14, in triple overtime.
