Fort Wayne, IN — Fort Wayne, IN — There was no late-game drama this time — just a steady, four-quarter clinic. The No. 2-ranked Bishop Dwenger Saints leaned on a balanced ground game and a suffocating defense to shut out visiting Wayne 27-0 on Friday night at Shields Field, pushing their record to 3-0 on the season. The Saints set the tone early. Midway through the first quarter, #9 Jordan Fabini bulled in from two yards out to cap the opening scoring drive, and #1 Eric Hudson tacked on the extra point for a quick 7-0 lead. Before the period was out, Hudson added a 33-yard field goal to stretch it to 10-0. Dwenger kept its foot on the gas in the second. #23 Kolyn Campbell punched in a 2-yard touchdown run — Hudson again good on the kick — to make it 17-0. Then, with 1:52 left before the break, #6 Max Jordan broke free for an 8-yard scoring run, and Hudson's third PAT sent the Saints into halftime comfortably ahead, 24-0. The scoring slowed after the break, but the outcome was never in question. Hudson closed the books midway through the third with his second 33-yard field goal of the night, making it 27-0 — a lead the Dwenger defense had no intention of surrendering. If the offense was balanced, the defense was relentless. The Saints pitched their second consecutive shutout and have yet to allow a single point in regulation. The General’s managed just 75 yards through the air and could never find a rhythm on the ground, as the Dwenger front repeatedly snuffed out drives before they could develop. Quarterback Tommy Coffman directed the attack with efficiency, completing 11 of 21 passes for 93 yards while also leading the Saints on the ground with 82 rushing yards on 11 carries, including a 34-yard burst. Harrison Schenkel paced the receivers with three grabs for 36 yards. But the story was the group effort. It was the kind of complete performance that contenders are built on — and the timing is ideal. Bishop Dwenger stays home next Friday to host rival Carroll (2-1) in a Summit Athletic Conference showdown with major league implications.
