Fort Wayne, IN — FORT WAYNE, IN — The Bishop Dwenger Saints battled Friday night against Carroll, jumping out to an early two-score lead before eventually falling 49-29. The Saints showed plenty of positives throughout the night, finding the end zone on the ground, through the air and on defense. The loss was Dwenger’s first of the season, moving the Saints to 3-1. Dwenger set the tone early. In the first quarter, Jordan Fabini powered his way into the end zone from two yards out, giving the Saints an early 7-0 advantage. The senior fullback helped establish a physical presence up front and gave Dwenger exactly the start it was looking for. The Saints struck again just over a minute later. Kolyn Campbell broke loose for a 21-yard rushing touchdown, extending the lead to 14-0. Dwenger’s ground game was rolling early, with the offensive line creating room and the Saints taking advantage with two first-quarter touchdowns. After Carroll responded in the second quarter, Dwenger entered halftime trailing 28-14. The Saints came out of the locker room needing a spark, and the offense delivered almost immediately. With 11:08 remaining in the third quarter, Tommy Coffman found Max Jordan for a 19-yard touchdown, pulling the Saints back within one score at 28-21. The connection gave Dwenger some early second-half momentum and showed another dimension of the Saints offense after both first-quarter touchdowns came on the ground. Dwenger continued battling even as the deficit grew. The Saints never stopped competing, and the defense was rewarded late in the fourth quarter. Isaiah Henry recovered a fumble for a touchdown with two minutes remaining, turning a takeaway directly into points. Dwenger followed it up with a successful two-point conversion to bring the final score to 49-29. There were plenty of positives for the Saints despite the result. Dwenger received touchdowns from four different players and scored in three different ways. Fabini brought power out of the fullback position, Campbell provided an explosive run, Coffman and Jordan connected through the air, and Henry turned a defensive takeaway into six points. The Saints also showed their ability to respond. After seeing their early lead disappear, Dwenger came out of halftime and immediately made it a one-score game. Even late in the fourth quarter, the defense continued attacking the football and creating opportunities. It wasn’t the result Dwenger wanted, but one night doesn’t change the strong start the Saints have put together. At 3-1, Dwenger has plenty to build on as the season continues and will look to use Friday night as an opportunity to improve moving forward.
