Recap
Fort Wayne, IN — The Bishop Dwenger Saints put together a dominant performance Friday night, using a balanced offensive attack and a shutdown defensive effort to defeat Northrop 35-7 at Shields Field. Dwenger found the end zone five times, built a 21-7 halftime advantage and held the Bruins scoreless throughout the entire second half to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Dwenger set the tone immediately. On the Saints’ opening drive, Max Jordan powered his way in from 10 yards out for a rushing touchdown. The two-point attempt was unsuccessful, but Dwenger had quickly established a 6-0 advantage.
The Saints weren’t done in the opening quarter. Tommy Coffman connected with Nick O’Keefe for a touchdown, giving Dwenger its second score of the night. This time, Jordan converted the two-point attempt, stretching the Saints’ advantage to 14-0 and completing an impressive opening quarter.
After Northrop cut into the lead in the second quarter, Dwenger made sure it carried momentum into the locker room. Coffman called his own number and found the end zone on the ground, giving the Saints another touchdown before the break. The score sent Dwenger into halftime with a commanding 21-7 advantage.
The Saints came out of halftime and continued to control the game. With 5:24 remaining in the third quarter, Coffman found Logan Parrish for an 11-yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to 28-7. It was Coffman’s third total touchdown of the night as the senior quarterback continued making plays with both his arm and his legs.
Dwenger’s ground game put the finishing touches on the victory in the fourth quarter. With 8:27 remaining, O’Keefe powered his way across the goal line from one yard out, giving him his second touchdown of the night and extending the Saints’ advantage to 35-7.
That Dwenger defense deserves plenty of credit. After surrendering one touchdown in the second quarter, the Saints slammed the door for the remainder of the night. Northrop was held scoreless throughout the second half as Dwenger consistently got stops and allowed its offense to control the game.
The Saints showed their balance offensively as well. Jordan started the scoring on the ground and added a two-point conversion, Coffman accounted for three touchdowns, O’Keefe scored both as a receiver and a runner, and Parrish added an 11-yard touchdown reception. Coffman finished the night with 224 passing yards, two passing touchdowns and a rushing score, leading an offense that consistently found ways to move the football.
It was a complete team performance for a Dwenger squad that continues to build momentum. The Saints scored on their opening drive, built an early two-score advantage and never allowed Northrop to seriously threaten in the second half. Dwenger’s offense produced five touchdowns while its defense held the Bruins to just seven points.
The 35-7 victory also avenged last season’s 21-18 loss to Northrop. Now 5-1, the Saints have won back-to-back games and continue to build momentum as the regular season moves into its final stretch.
