Fort Wayne, IN — Bishop Dwenger delivered a dominant all-around performance in the Battle of the Bishops Friday night, using a balanced offense, a suffocating defense and a big night from special teams to defeat rival Bishop Luers 34-6. The Saints piled up 396 yards of offense, forced two interceptions and held the Knights to just 187 total yards in the convincing victory. After a scoreless opening quarter, Dwenger broke through early in the second. Eric Hudson drilled a 31-yard field goal with 11:55 remaining to put the Saints on top 3-0 and start what would become a 17-point quarter. The Saints found the end zone for the first time with 7:21 remaining in the half. Tommy Coffman connected with Nick O’Keefe for a 39-yard touchdown, with O’Keefe providing the big play downfield to stretch the advantage to 10-0 following Hudson’s extra point. Dwenger wasn’t finished. With just 14 seconds remaining before halftime, Max Jordan powered his way into the end zone from one yard out. Hudson added the extra point, sending the Saints into the locker room with a commanding 17-0 advantage. The Saints came right back out firing in the third quarter. With 8:41 remaining, Coffman found Jordan for a 15-yard touchdown pass, giving Jordan his second score of the night and Coffman his second touchdown pass. Hudson remained perfect on the extra point, extending Dwenger’s lead to 24-0. Luers managed its only touchdown late in the third quarter, but Dwenger immediately responded to begin the fourth. Just eight seconds into the final quarter, Coffman took off for a 14-yard rushing touchdown, giving the senior quarterback his third total touchdown of the night. Hudson’s extra point pushed the Saints’ advantage to 31-6. Hudson then put the finishing touches on the victory. With 2:19 remaining, he connected on a 43-yard field goal, his second make of the night, to produce the final 34-6 margin. Hudson finished 2-for-2 on field goals and 4-for-4 on extra points, accounting for 10 points. Coffman led an efficient night for the Dwenger offense, completing 16 of 24 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns while adding 83 rushing yards and another score. Jordan contributed on the ground and through the air, rushing for 47 yards and a touchdown while catching three passes for 40 yards and another score. O’Keefe led the Saints with 61 receiving yards and a touchdown. The offensive line helped Dwenger control the game from start to finish. The Saints rushed for 194 yards at 6.9 yards per carry and finished with 396 total yards. Dwenger moved the chains 25 times while consistently creating opportunities for Coffman and the Saints’ playmakers. The defense was every bit as impressive. Dwenger held Luers to just 60 passing yards and 187 total yards, while allowing only one touchdown. Max Jordan led the Saints with nine total tackles, followed by Jordan Fabini with eight and Cooper Campbell with five. The secondary made its presence felt as well. Nick O’Keefe intercepted a pass and returned it 43 yards, while Colin Jeffrey added another interception. O’Keefe also broke up a pass, while Logan Parrish recorded two pass breakups as Dwenger made life difficult for the Luers passing attack throughout the night. It was a complete performance in one of Fort Wayne’s biggest rivalry games. The Saints controlled the line of scrimmage, produced 396 yards of offense, forced turnovers and scored through the air, on the ground and with Hudson’s leg.
