Tonganoxie, KS — Tonganoxie opened the season Friday night with a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Kansas City Christian, showing plenty of positives in the first match of the year. The Chieftains found the back of the net twice, with Thaddeus Hileman and Jaxon Albert each scoring. One of the highlights of the night came on Hileman’s goal, as Sylas Lungu played a beautiful ball through the middle of the field, splitting the defense and putting Hileman in position to finish. Tonganoxie controlled much of the match with 56.7% possession and completed 296 of 392 passes (76%). The Chieftains were especially effective moving the ball in dangerous areas, completing 104 of 134 passes in the attacking third (78%). They also produced 21 shots, putting six on target, while earning eight corner kicks. The numbers showed a team that was comfortable keeping the ball and building attacks. Tonganoxie put together 80 passing sequences, averaged 4.5 passes per sequence, and had one possession reach 19 consecutive passes. While there are certainly areas to clean up after allowing two goals and settling for the draw, it was an encouraging opening performance. The Chieftains created chances, controlled the ball for long stretches and showed glimpses of what this group can become as the season progresses.
