Lansing, KS — The Chieftains delivered an exciting finish last night, defeating Lansing High School 3-2 in overtime on a golden goal from Rezik Morando. Lansing struck first early in the opening half, putting us behind 1-0. Our boys responded as Pavell Leyva connected with Thaddeus Hileman, who found the back of the net to bring the match level at 1-1 heading into halftime. In the second half, Jaxon Albert was taken down inside the box, earning the Chieftains a penalty kick. Hileman stepped to the spot and buried his shot into the top-right corner to give us a 2-1 advantage. Lansing answered later in the half after being awarded a penalty kick near the edge of our box. They converted the opportunity to tie the match at 2-2 and eventually send us into overtime. That's when the night belonged to Rezik Morando. With the match in golden-goal overtime, Leyva picked up his second assist of the night, finding Morando, who scored the first goal of his high school career at the perfect time. The goal immediately ended the match and gave the Chieftains a thrilling 3-2 victory. Hileman continued his outstanding start to the season, scoring twice on the night. He has now scored in all three matches this season and has already totaled four goals. More than anything, we were proud of the fight our team showed. We trailed, responded, took the lead, were forced into overtime, and still found a way to finish the job. For a young team, those are the moments that build confidence and character.
