Laguna Beach, CA — The LBHS Frosh Soph team put their undefeated season on the line when they hosted the Westlake Warriors for a Friday afternoon contest. By early in the second quarter, the Breakers found themselves down 21 to nothing. They had had limited success on offense and had been unable to stop the Warriors offense. On second and long, quarterback Braden Hansen found Silas Murray over the middle where Silas made a spectacular one-handed catch. This seemed to motivate the Breakers and they drove the ball downfield until Hansen found Hendricks McMann open for a 19 yard touchdown pass. The Warriors were driving again and threatening to score, when Colton Nassour intercepted a ball at the one yard line. With time running out in the first half, Braden Hansen scrambled and eluded tackles for a 30 yard touchdown run, making the score at halftime Westlake 21 Laguna 13. Laguna started the second half with the ball on their 8 yard line after a penalty on the kickoff. Undaunted, Laguna drove down into Westlake territory where Braden found Kian Vellmure in the end zone for touchdown. Laguna chose to go for a two point play that was successful tying the score at 21. Laguna capped the quarter with a pass from Braden Hansen to Ryder Bright from 10 yards out. This gave Laguna their first lead of the day 27-21. On Westlakes next possession, they were able to drive the ball down the field, and with a 1 yard QB sneak, they tied the score at 27. Laguna was unable to move the ball in their next possession, giving the ball back to Westlake. On this drive Westlake was able to find an open receiver for an 8 yard touchdown pass, giving them the lead back 34 to 27 with only 10 seconds left in the game. Laguna’s last second attempt came up short, leading to their first loss of the season.
