Laguna Beach, CA — The LBHS Varsity Football team began Friday nights game with a 0-2 record, and was facing the 18th ranked team in the state of Nevada, the Shadow Ridge Mustangs. Laguna won the coin toss, and chose to take the ball. Unable to move the ball, Laguna was forced to punt. On the Mustangs drive, a face masking penalty against Laguna took them out of a third and long situation. On the next play, however, Brady Stringham intercepted a pass from the Mustang quarterback. Laguna drove the ball to the 2 yard line, and after two unsuccessful runs quarterback Jack Hurst found receiver Will Kimball for a 2 yard touchdown pass. In the second quarter, the Breakers jarred the football loose from the Mustangs running back, and William Golden recovered the fumble. Shortly after that, quarterback Jack Hurst found receiver Brady Stringham along the left side sideline for a 27 yard touchdown pass. On Shadow Ridge’s following drive, again they drove the ball to Laguna territory, and were able to punch it in on an 8 yard run, making the score Laguna 14 Shadow Ridge 7. Laguna was forced to punt on their next possession, however Liam Nassour intercepted a Mustang pass and gave the Breakers good field position. Hurst then found his favorite receiver once again and Brady Stringham had a catch and run from 40 yards out for what turned out to be the final score of the game. The second half of the game was a defensive battle with neither team able to score. The Mustangs did drive the ball to the Laguna 5 yard line, but the Breakers defense, led by Xavier Brooks, Wyatt Bogdan, Garrett Byerly, and Grayson Kazmouz were able to turn them away on four attempts. In the fourth quarter the same scenario occurred. Shadow Ridge had the ball inside the Laguna 10 yard line, but were denied again. The final play of the game was yet another Liam Nassour interception to cap off the Breakers first victory of the season. Final score Laguna 21 Shadow Ridge 7.
