Laguna Beach, CA — On a cool, rainy Senior Night at Guyer Field, the Laguna Beach Breakers battled the Western Pioneers through a lightning delay and a series of momentum swings before ultimately falling 26-13 in a CIF Southern Section Delta League matchup. The Breakers showed resilience in the second half, turning a 20-point deficit into a one-score game in the fourth quarter. But Western answered with a late touchdown, and Laguna Beach was unable to finish its final scoring opportunity. Western opened the game with an 11-play drive after receiving the kickoff, but the Breakers’ defense came up with a key sequence as senior Greyson Kazmouz and junior Sokka Molteni pressured the Pioneers’ quarterback into a third-and-long situation. Play was then suspended for 30 minutes because of lightning in the area. When action resumed, Laguna Beach forced a turnover on downs. The Breakers went three-and-out on their opening possession, however, and senior Dean Smith delivered a punt that pinned Western at its own 27-yard line. The Pioneers broke through with a 44-yard gain on a jet-sweep double pass, setting up a scoring drive that ended five plays later with a touchdown to give Western a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Laguna Beach threatened to answer when senior Bob Gardner broke loose for a 42-yard run up the middle. The drive stalled at the Western 11-yard line, though, and the Breakers turned the ball over on downs. Laguna Beach later put together another promising possession, only to be stopped on fourth-and-short at the Pioneers’ 14-yard line. The Breakers’ uphill climb grew steeper after halftime. Western intercepted a pass on third-and-12 on Laguna Beach’s opening possession of the second half, returning the ball to the 11-yard line. Four plays later, the Pioneers found the end zone on a four-yard touchdown pass to the flat. Western struck again just three plays after Laguna Beach took possession at its own 38-yard line. The Pioneers intercepted a screen pass and returned it 66 yards for a touchdown, extending their advantage to 20-0. Facing a sizable deficit, the Breakers responded with their best sustained drive of the night. Laguna Beach marched 50 yards on 10 plays, with Gardner providing another spark and senior Wyatt Bogdan making a spectacular touchdown catch in traffic. The score cut Western’s lead to 20-7 and gave the Breakers new life. Laguna Beach then recovered the ensuing onside kick, taking over at the Western 43-yard line. The Breakers carried that momentum into the fourth quarter, opening the period with a 16-yard reverse by Brady Stringham. The drive culminated in a six-yard touchdown pass from Braden Hansen to senior Will Kimball, pulling Laguna Beach within 20-13 and putting the pressure back on the Pioneers. Western answered on its next possession, breaking off a 23-yard touchdown run around the right side to push its lead to 26-13. The Breakers continued to fight. Starting at their own 36-yard line, Hansen connected with Kimball for a 35-yard completion down the right sideline to move Laguna Beach into scoring position. But the drive stalled at the Western 7-yard line, and the Breakers turned the ball over on downs, ending their final opportunity to close the gap. Despite the final score, Laguna Beach showed determination in the second half, overcoming a 20-point deficit to make it a one-score game in the fourth quarter. The Breakers’ comeback bid ultimately fell short as Western made the key plays needed to secure the 26-13 victory.
