Tucson, AZ — What began as a defensive battle quickly turned into an offensive explosion as Salpointe Catholic pulled away from Tucson High for a 45-20 victory Friday night at Ed Doherty Stadium. The Lancers carried a narrow 10-7 lead into halftime before erupting offensively in the second half. Both teams struggled to establish a rhythm early, with defense and costly mistakes controlling much of the opening half. Salpointe broke through first when Troy Kuhlman connected on a 31-yard field goal with 3:42 remaining in the first quarter, giving the Lancers a 3-0 lead. Tucson’s defense continued to apply pressure, highlighted by a crushing hit from Dillion Flannigan-Jones, who came untouched on a blitz against Salpointe quarterback Aiden Robinson. The Lancers finally reached the end zone with 1:31 remaining before halftime when OJ Flores powered across the goal line from 1 yard out, extending the lead to 10-0. Flores then made his presence felt on defense, getting to Tucson quarterback Brenton Coleman for a sack. But just when it appeared Salpointe would take a two-score advantage into halftime, Flannigan-Jones delivered the biggest play of the half. With only 20.9 seconds remaining, he intercepted a pass and raced it back for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 10-7 and sending the Badgers into the locker room with a surge of momentum. That momentum didn’t last long. Salpointe’s offense came alive after halftime, steadily building its lead and transforming a tight defensive struggle into a convincing victory. Flores added his second rushing touchdown of the night, while Jake Bondi returned a kickoff for a touchdown for the second consecutive week. Coleman connected with Ezra Spivey for a Tucson touchdown, but Salpointe answered when Drew Palinawan found David Rushing for a score, giving the Lancers a 31-14 advantage with 9:04 remaining. The Coleman-to-Spivey and Palinawan-to-Rushing connections each produced another touchdown as both passing attacks heated up late. Amil Deon also found the end zone on the ground for Salpointe, helping the Lancers complete their second-half surge and secure the 45-20 victory. Salpointe will face its biggest test of the young season when it hosts perennial powerhouse Chandler on Friday at 7 p.m. Tucson High will look to bounce back Thursday night when the Badgers host Walden Grove at 7 p.m.
