Fort Wayne, IN — The Bishop Dwenger JV football team put together another strong performance, using a physical rushing attack and timely defensive stops to defeat Northrop 29-20. The Saints answered nearly every Northrop push throughout the night and finished the job with a fourth-quarter touchdown to secure the nine-point victory. Dwenger got on the board first. With 6:39 remaining in the first quarter, the Saints found the end zone and added the extra point to take an early 7-0 lead. Northrop answered later in the quarter and converted a two-point attempt, leaving Dwenger facing a narrow 8-7 deficit. The Saints responded in the second quarter. With 7:05 remaining, quarterback Blaise Garrett powered his way into the end zone from two yards out. The extra point gave Dwenger the lead back at 14-8, providing an answer when the Saints needed it. Northrop scored again later in the quarter, but Dwenger’s defense came up with an important stand on the two-point conversion attempt. That stop kept the game tied at 14-14 heading into halftime and proved valuable as the game moved into the second half. The Saints came out of the break ready to regain control. With 3:43 remaining in the third quarter, Hunter Carteaux broke through for a 15-yard rushing touchdown. Dwenger then converted the two-point attempt, pushing the Saints ahead 22-14. Northrop cut into the advantage with a touchdown late in the third quarter, but once again the Dwenger defense denied the two-point conversion. The stop allowed the Saints to maintain a 22-20 lead heading into the fourth quarter. With the game still hanging in the balance, Dwenger’s offense delivered. With 4:46 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Saints punched it in from two yards out for a rushing touchdown. The extra point was good, giving Dwenger some much-needed breathing room and extending the lead to 29-20. From there, the Saints defense finished the job. After allowing Northrop to pull within two points late in the third quarter, Dwenger shut the Bruins out for the entire fourth quarter, protecting the lead and securing the victory. That Saints rushing attack deserves plenty of credit. Garrett provided a tough two-yard touchdown in the second quarter, Carteaux delivered a big 15-yard score in the third, and Dwenger finished the scoring with another physical goal-line touchdown in the fourth. When the Saints needed yards and points, the ground game continued to answer. The defense also made plays in some of the biggest moments of the night. Two failed Northrop two-point attempts helped Dwenger maintain control of a close game, and the fourth-quarter shutout allowed the Saints to close it out. It was another complete team effort from the Bishop Dwenger JV. The Saints responded to adversity, regained the lead in the second half and made the plays necessary down the stretch to come away with a hard-fought 29-20 victory.
