Leo, IN — Leo, IN — For a half, nothing came easy for the Bishop Dwenger Saints. For the second half, nothing seemed to go wrong. In their first road game of the season, the BD freshmen dug out of an early 14-0 hole and steamrolled Leo the rest of the way, riding a dominant defense and a trio of gutsy fake PATs to a 30-14 win that pushed the Class of 2030 to 2-0. It didn't look promising early. Midway through the first quarter, Leo struck first to grab a 7-0 lead. The Saints answered with a productive opening drive of their own — moving the chains and stacking up yards — but the possession fizzled on a failed fourth-down conversion early in the second quarter, handing the ball right back to the Lions. Leo threatened to make BD pay. The Lions marched down and set up first-and-goal from the 9, but the Saints' bend-but-don't-break defense stiffened, turning them away without a point and forcing a change of possession that pinned BD deep in its own territory. The field position caught up with the Saints when a fumble rolled into the end zone and Leo pounced on it for a touchdown and a commanding 14-0 edge. The mistakes kept coming. A third BD fumble gave Leo the ball on the Saints' 25, and the Lions looked poised to blow the game open. Instead, the defense held again — somehow — forcing a four-and-out and returning the ball to the offense with under two minutes on the clock. That's when the Saints delivered what was likely the play of the game. As time expired in the first half, quarterback #15 Landin Haynes uncorked a 37-yard bomb to #24 Asher Bullerman for the score. A successful fake PAT cut the deficit to six, and BD headed to the break trailing just 14-8. The second half belonged entirely to the Saints, who took over on both sides of the ball. A fumble recovery by #39 Michael McCarthy set BD up with great field position, and the offense cashed in when Bullerman took a reverse to the house for his second touchdown of the day. Another fake PAT — this time with #32 Seth Andes punching it in — flipped the scoreboard and gave Dwenger its first lead at 16-14. From there, the takeaways piled up. Yet another Leo fumble, recovered by Bullerman on the 30, handed the offense a short field, and #23 Carter Lyons finished the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run to make it 22-14. The PAT was no good, but the Saints weren't done. With 5:21 left, Lyons came down with a tipped ball for an interception and returned it to the Leo 18. Andes did the rest, punching in his second score from five yards out. A third successful fake PAT — good for two — capped the night and sealed a 30-14 Saints victory over the Lions. After a shaky opening half, the BD defense dominated the rest of the way, finishing with three takeaways, a handful of quarterback hurries, and a knack for frustrating Leo time and again. Two games in, the Class of 2030 is 2-0 — and this group keeps finding ways to win.
