Recap
Fort Wayne, IN — The Bishop Dwenger freshman football team battled through two weather delays and an early deficit to secure a thrilling 20-13 victory over Carroll. Behind two defensive touchdowns, an explosive 85-yard touchdown pass and a crucial special teams recovery, the Saints put together a complete second-half performance to come away with the win.
After two weather delays interrupted the action, Dwenger found itself trailing 6-0 heading into halftime. The Saints' defense kept the game within reach, giving the offense and special teams an opportunity to turn things around in the second half.
Dwenger wasted little time making its presence felt. On Carroll's opening possession of the third quarter, a bad punt snap near the goal line created an opportunity for the Saints. Colin Koepke was right there to scoop up the loose football and race into the end zone for a touchdown. The two-point conversion was unsuccessful, but Dwenger had tied the game at 6-6.
The Saints' defense wasn't finished. On Carroll's very next possession, Collin Buell jumped a pass and took it all the way back for a pick-six, giving Dwenger its first lead of the night. Sorsha Boacheon connected on the extra point, putting the Saints ahead 13-6 in the third quarter.
Dwenger continued to make plays defensively. Later in the quarter, Beau Chaney came up with another interception, adding to an impressive stretch for the Saints' defense. The unit continued to stand strong, eventually turning Carroll away on fourth-and-goal and giving Dwenger possession deep in its own territory to begin the fourth quarter.
With the Saints backed up near their own goal line, the offense delivered its biggest play of the night. Quarterback Landin Haynes connected with Asher Bullerman for an explosive 85-yard touchdown pass, extending Dwenger's advantage. Boacheon added another extra point, giving the Saints a commanding 20-6 lead in the fourth quarter.
Carroll managed to cut the deficit to 20-13 with one minute remaining, setting up one final test for Dwenger's special teams. With the game on the line, Hudson Painter secured the ensuing onside kick, allowing the Saints to maintain possession and seal the seven-point victory.
That defense deserves a game ball. Time and again, the Saints stepped up when it mattered most, producing two touchdowns off Carroll's special teams and offensive mistakes, grabbing another interception and coming away with a critical fourth-and-goal stop. Koepke and Buell completely shifted the momentum with their touchdowns, while Chaney added another takeaway to a dominant defensive stretch.
The offense delivered when it mattered most as well. Haynes and Bullerman connected for an 85-yard touchdown that gave Dwenger some much-needed breathing room, while Boacheon's two successful extra points and Painter's late onside kick recovery helped secure the victory.
It was a complete team effort for a freshman group that refused to let an early deficit or two weather delays get in the way. The Saints scored 20 unanswered points in the second half and made the plays necessary down the stretch to walk away with a hard-fought 20-13 victory over Carroll.
