Newport Beach, CA — The Newport Harbor lacrosse team enjoyed a pair of runaway wins to close out the first month of the season undefeated in Sunset League play. The Sailors outclassed Marina 20-3 in a mid-week game in Huntington Beach before Friday night’s 23-0 victory over Laguna Beach at Davidson Field. Harbor improved to 4-0 in league action, 7-6 overall with a six game win streak heading in to a true-test portion of its schedule. The Sailors face off against Corona del Mar Wednesday evening at Davidson Field before traveling to Los Alamitos for a Friday night game. Dominating the two most recent opponents by a combined 43-3 margin allowed Head Coach Mark Todd to utilize the depth in the program with nearly all reserves and several JV standouts gaining valuable varsity playing time. Junior Rhett Farmer netted four goals to lead the win over Laguna Beach with Braydon Butler, Hutton Wooters and Aidan Goltz scoring three apiece. Junior Michael Morrison added two goals for the Sailors. Junior goaltender Garrett Rovazinni is credited with the shutout though he needed to make only a few saves behind an impenetrable defense led by juniors Jack Whelan, Michael McGrath and Chad Koste. McGrath also contributed his first goal of the season. “(The two games) worked being a lot of practice sessions where - with no diminishing the young men we just played - we just were able to focus on what we do, and improve on what we do,” said Coach Todd of the back-to-back blowout wins. “Now we’ve got the two toughest opponents. It’s been years since Harbor has won against CdM. That’s a big game. If we play up to our potential, we can make it a good game.” The 2019 Battle of the Bay lacrosse edition number one is Wednesday night at Davidson Field. The JV game starts at 5:00 with the varsity showdown following at 7:00 pm. - Matt Morrison
