Cypress, CA — The battle for the Empire League championship came down to the next to the last week of the season and two quality teams stood toe-to-toe and battled it out. In the end, it was the Cypress Centurions who would claim their seventh straight league championship Friday by defeating Kennedy High School by a score of 4-0. Sam Moctezuma went to the mound for the Irish and turned in another quality start, no-hitting Cypress for 3 innings and not allowing a run. In the 4th inning, Cypress rallied for 3 runs but only one was earned. Moctezuma gave up a homer in the 5th to round out the scoring for the afternoon. He was relieved in the 6th by Travis Wilson who turned the Centurions away without a run. The main story of the day was the inability of Kennedy to figure out the Cypress pitcher. Brett Wozniak allowed only 3 hits on the afternoon, going the distance for a complete game shutout. The Irish didn’t get their first hit until the 5th inning when Tyler Beckler lined a solid single to right. Wyatt Johnson drove a ball to the fence in the 6th and Jaelyn Edds singled up the middle in the 7th. They were the only Kennedy batters to reach base via a hit. The loss was only the second time The Irish had been held scoreless in the last 15 games. The Irish will have little opportunity to lick their wounds because the most crucial part of the season arrives next week. They face off with Pacifica in the final two games of the regular schedule, battling for second place and a birth in the CIF post season. Having already attained the best Kennedy season in years and having proven themselves a strong team, they now will see how far they can go. Their fans are ready for the ride!
