La Palma, CA — As this week began, it was certain that the pitching staff of the Kennedy Fighting Irish was going to be tested severely. What was not known is just how well they would meet the test. Wednesday afternoon the Irish played their fifth game in as many days and their pitching has been nothing short of spectacular. So when Travis Wilson was handed the ball Wednesday afternoon against Tesoro, he had a high standard to match. At the end of the day, he had more than fulfilled his responsibility as he pitched the Irish to a 4-2 win on the Kennedy field. Wilson went the distance scattering 7 hits and allowing only 2 runs, one of which was unearned. Working out of jams in the second and fifth innings, he showed courage and determination to go along with good control and a lively fastball. Kennedy jumped out to a quick lead in the first when Sebastian McSherry drove home Johnny Soto to make the game 1-0, only to see Tesoro come back to tie it up in the second. That is how it stood in the third when the Irish made their move. Chase Leonard led off with a solid single to left and Soto walked. After a wild pitch moved them into scoring position, Wyatt Johnson plated Leonard with a sacrifice fly to center. McSherry was hit by a pitch putting two men on again and setting the plate for Tyler Beckler. The third baseman ripped an RBI double to the wall in left to make the score 3-1. A wild pitch scored McSherry from third to put the Irish up 4-1. McSherry had another good day. The catcher got two hits and gunned down a runner trying to steal second. Tesoro started an uprising in the fifth, amassing four hits, three of them in a row, for their second run. But with the bases loaded and two outs, Wilson slammed the door on them by forcing a sky high popout to Leonard at short. That proved to be their last hope as Wilson shut them down in the final two frames for a complete game victory, his first of the year and the fourth in a row for the Irish. After a much deserved day off on Thursday, The Irish play a league make up game Friday against Crean Lutheran at the Kennedy field. Game time is 3pm.
