Fullerton, CA — The Royals faced No. 17 Arizona Christian Thursday night in a conference matchup. Coming into the game the Royals are 16-10 overall and 5-9 in GSAC, while the Firestorm are 20-6 overall and 10-4 in GSAC. In the first round of GSAC play the Firestorm defeated the Royals 85-67 in Arizona, but the Royals took game two 64-63 to upset ACU. In the first half, the game remained within four points as both teams were applied pressure on defense. The Royals had 22 rebounds and forced 7 turnovers in the first half. With three minutes left, Josh Powell Davis made a layup to go up by four, 30-26. The Firestorm would only score one more bucket after this and the Royals led at halftime 30-28. The second half started with both teams struggling to find the net as only three points were scored in the first five minutes. The Firestorm gained a six-point lead forcing the Royals to turnover the ball in two straight possessions. After a three-pointer from Josh Powell-Davis (JR/Oakland, CA), both Ibe Gerlach (SR/Draper, Utah) and Eric Toles (SR/Sacramento, CA) converted three-point plays after being fouled. This led the Royals to regain the lead by one halfway through the second half. The game remained close as the Royals and Firestorm exchanged basket for basked as the clock continued to wind down. Keith Hunter (SR/Oakland, CA) hit a three-pointer with 2:30 left to gain the four-point lead for the Royals. With the Royals leading by two with twenty-five seconds left, the Firestorm hit a three-pointer to go up by 1 with fifteen seconds left. One again, Keith Hunter made a layup to put the Royals up by one to win the game for the Royals. Josh Powell-Davis led the offense for the Royals with 17 points and also contributed 7 rebounds. Keith Hunter and Anthony Garcia (JR/Fontana, CA) each added 10 points of their own.
