Santa Ana, CA — The Foothill Knights opened the 2020 softball season with a thoroughly dominating win over the visiting Dana Hills High School. Senior Stella Turner needed just 74 pitches to roll through the Dolphin lineup. Turner and junior catcher Delaney O’Donoghue stifled the visitors, limiting Dana Hills to just three hits and one run. After a 1-2-3 top of the first, the Knights offense jumped on the Dolphins’ starting pitcher with junior Mikayla Prudholme leading off the inning by being hit by a pitch. Freshman Alex Storey dropped a sacrifice bunt, advancing Prudholme to second base. Junior Arissa Calvillo ground out a walk, bringing up junior Alyson Crawford fouled off four two-strike pitches before ripping a single into center field, scoring Prudholme. Turner again retired the side in the second inning, bringing the Knights offense back to the plate. Sophomore Eva Chahbazian led of the inning by reaching base on an infield error. Sophomore Nicole Zerkel then beat out a bunt, placing runners on first and second. Prudholme wasted little time, blasting a single to left field, loading the bases. Two pitches later, Storey send a line drive into left-center, plating two Knights. Another quiet inning for Turner was followed by a 1-2-3 inning for the Knights. The fourth inning saw Foothill score two more as Prudholme singled in Chahbazian from second base and advanced Zerkel to third. Zerkel then stole home on the front half of a double steal. Another Foothill score followed in the fifth inning. The Dolphins managed to push one run across in the sixth inning, but the Knights answered with two of their own. After a Prudholme walk and a bunt base hit by Storey, Crawford reached base on another Dana Hills error that allowed Prudholme to score and Storey to advance to third, where she scored on a wild pitch. For the game Dana Hills scored one run on three hits and committed six errors. The Knights tallied eight runs on nine hits while committing no errors.
