La Palma, CA — The Fighting Irish of Kennedy High School welcomed the Eleanor Roosevelt High School Mustangs to their La Palma field Friday afternoon as they continued competition in the 2020 Elks Tournament. Wyatt Johnson took the mound for the Irish and turned in a strong outing, scattering 8 hits while going 6 2/3 innings. Of the 3 runs he allowed, one was unearned. He also set down 8 batters on strikeouts. He was relieved by Brett Clark who got out of a jam in the 7th by forcing a weak popup. After Roosevelt took the lead with a run in the third inning, Kennedy answered back in the bottom half of that frame. After fouling off several pitches, David Roman worked his way aboard with a walk and, after two outs, had moved around to third. Sebastian McSherry, who was robbed of a hit in his first at bat by a diving catch in center field, was not to be denied this time. He cranked a blast over the left field wall and the Irish had captured the lead. Sebastian continues to swing the bat well in the early season. That is the way it remained until a 2 out sacrifice fly for Roosevelt in the sixth knotted the score at 2-2. Johnson took the tie into the final frame and had almost shut the door again when a wild pitch allowed what would be the game winning run to come home. But the main story of the day was the difficulty that Kennedy had at the plate, managing a total of only 3 hits. The home run by McSherry was one of very few highlights in the Irish offensive attack. Tyler Beckler continued his fine start of the season by singling sharply in the third. Tyler has collected 8 hits in his first 12 official at bats. Chase Leonard lined a solid single to right in the 6th to round out the Irish hitting. Kennedy’s record now stands at 1-3. For those who might feel discouragement, that is only one win behind their pace after four games last year. And everyone knows how that season turned out. The Irish continue in the Elk’s tournament next week with games on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The Monday game will be held at Fullerton High School at 3pm.
