Mission Viejo, CA — The Lady Knights softball team lost a tight game against Capistrano Valley High School in a pool-play game in the Laguna Hills Softball Tournament by a score of 8-7. The Cougars scored three runs in the top of the first to grab an early lead. Foothill answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Arissa Calvillo and Shannon Cunningham each singled to center. Stella Turner then launched a triple to left field on the first pitch, driving in both runners. Alyson Crawford followed with another single, scoring courtesy runner Nicole Zerkel to tie the game. After a scoreless second inning, Capo Valley strung together four hits, a hit batter, and an error to jump out to a 7-3 lead in the top half of the third inning. Again, the Knights answered with their own rally. Cunningham led off with her second single and scored on a double by Turner. Zerkel advanced to third base on a wild pitch and Delaney O'Donoghue walked. Courtesy runner Jade Conner stole second base and followed Zerkel home when Eva Chahbazian singled to left and advanced to second base on the throw to the plate. Unfortunately, the Knights couldn't get Chahbazian across to tie the game. The Knights threatened in the fourth inning, but could not score Sam Polowski from second after she started the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Foothill's next game will be a bracket elimination game later this week.
