Grand Rapids, MI — Brad Kurth had a long, successful run as Mona Shores’ girls basketball coach. He’s off to a great start as the Sailors’ boys coach, too. In Kurth’s first game at the boys helm Tuesday, Mona Shores earned a 43-36 road win over Grand Rapids Union in a season-opening OK Green Conference matchup. The Sailors outscored the Red Hawks 14-7 in the second quarter and 6-1 in the third to pull away. Parker Swartz scored a game-high 20 points on 9-of-15 shooting to go with four rebounds and three assists in leading Mona Shores. Donovan Russell added 10 points, six rebounds and two blocks for the Sailors. Kurth spent 20 years with the Mona Shores girls basketball program, including 11 as head coach when he compiled a record of 172-75 with six conference titles, four district championships and a regional finals appearance.
