San Clemente, CA — JSerra Frosh / Soph girl's tennis sailed into some very rough seas, losing to the Triton-esses of San Clemente 2 - 15 in the season opener. Great turnout .....Thank you parent drivers, photographers and football bleacher spectators ("tree people as Neil Diamond would call you). Sophia Garcia with Fionnuala McClain took out the Tritons line #2 team 6 to zero! Mia Contreras with Nicole Griffith also defeated this team, but in a squeaker, tiebreaker, 6-5 [9-7] ! Julia Domanskis and Makenna Mason lost a heartbreaker 5-6 [7-5] after leading most of the set. Julia wanted to win badly as a present to her Mom, as today was her 29th birthday! Heidi Mittwer and Jacqueline Poli were anxiously waiting their 3rd round match and the SC coach sent down their #2 team!!! as opponents!!! [their #2 vs our #7] The match was played in front of all the girls from both teams and the bleacher parents! This particular Triton duo would be on most schools JV teams. Jacki and Heidi took a game off of them, with Jacki holding her serve at 0-4. KOach Kirk thought this was major highlight of the day! "Watching these girls, freshly new to this game compete against two of their top players, is what makes this all worth while!" This year's Frosh / Soph team has a very unique "footprint". Half the team is made up of "seasoned" sophomores from last year's squad, many of whom could make JV in a "normal" year. A few of the girls have had some experience, enough to call them "novices". About 40% of the team is made up of pure beginners, who have have been working hard on groundies, serves and volleys - whilst learning where to stand in doubles and how to keep score! :) Next up: tomorrow (Sat. 2/27) at home vs Northwood HIgh 9:30 warm-up / 10am match time.
