San Juan Capistrano, CA — Thanks to our old friend Coach Tim DeLio, who added this last minute match for us today. It was way different than the hectic scene on Tuesday. Despite being the end of the quarter, we had a great turnout and all the players got to play at least 2 sets, most played 3. Singles carried the day going into the final round, except at the very end. With 16 sets finished, the score was tied 8-8; JSerra was down in game count, so tying 9-9 would do us no good. Luke Krolikowski, who was 2 for 2 going into round #3 (earning MVP honors for the day) played great against their top player, who was a cool cucumber and just kept plugging along. Marco Belciano, who had a slight lead through most of his final set, literally just ran out of gas against a fresh starter who was subbed in. Marco played through some long baseline rallies and closed the net when his opponent drew him in, never gave up. Marco had previously won his opening round of singles, 6. - 1. Brian Chi and Michael Woodward both picked up well deserved singles wins today as well; thank you for getting out of class early and filling in. MVP honors on the doubles side go to our #1 team: Max Chiotis and Kenneth Perez who won 2 of 3 sets played, tied the match up at 8-8, and hustled over to support our last players. Max’s big serve and Kennedy’s quick volleys gave them the winning edge in 2 of 3 sets played. Well done. Nicholas Barrios and doubles partner Parker Gibson picked up an additional win in the 2nd round, holding off the other team 6-4. We learned some good lessons today while playing some very good tennis. Primary one = a math lesson! We lost the only 2 tie-breakers today. Subtract 2 sets from SJHHS’s 10 and add 2 sets to JSerra’s 8, we win 10-8. Looking forward to seeing continued improvement by all the players. Thank you for great efforts today: Jordan Gessin, Ashton Peasley, Ronan McKeagney, Logan Lebsack, Sean Do. Next up: vs LaQuinta at home, Thursday, March 11th 2:30pm.
