Maize, KS — Thursday's game against Maize was a heartbreaker for Goddard Lions Varsity, as they lost the lead late in a 10-3 defeat. The game was tied at three with Maize batting in the bottom of the fifth when Sanders singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run. The Goddard Lions Varsity struggled to contain the high-powered offense of Maize, giving up ten runs. Goddard Lions Varsity captured the lead in the second inning. After Goddard Lions Varsity scored one run in the top of the fourth, Maize answered with one of their own. Maize then answered when Hartman singled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run. Otero was on the hill for Maize. The fireballer went three and a third innings, allowing three runs on three hits and striking out one. Jake Shope toed the rubber for Goddard Lions Varsity. Shope lasted four innings, allowing 11 hits and seven runs while striking out five. Lake Hamilton threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen. Goddard Lions Varsity launched one home run on the day. Jaden Wiley went deep in the first inning. Wiley went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Goddard Lions Varsity in hits. Maize scattered 14 hits in the game. Johnson, Helm, Sanders, and Hartman each had multiple hits for Maize.
