Maize, KS — Goddard Lions Varsity fought back after falling down by four runs in the second inning. The comeback fell just short though, in an 8-7 defeat to Maize on Thursday. Goddard Lions Varsity managed five runs in the failed comeback. Lake Hamilton, Bo Bantz, Hamilton, and Jake Shope powered the rally with RBIs. Goddard Lions Varsity collected nine hits and Maize had nine in the high-scoring affair. In the top of the sixth inning, Goddard Lions Varsity tied things up at seven when Shope singled on a 2-1 count, scoring one run. Goddard Lions Varsity put up three runs in the third inning. Hamilton and Bantz each drove in runs during the inning. Maize scored five runs in the second inning. The offensive firepower by Maize was led by Schmidt, Djourvic, Gustafson, and Schiefter, all sending runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning. Djourvic got the start for Maize. The hurler surrendered six runs on seven hits over four innings, striking out five. Seth Wilhelm was on the pitcher's mound for Goddard Lions Varsity. Wilhelm went four innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits, striking out two and walking one. Jaden Wiley threw two and two-thirds innings in relief. Goddard Lions Varsity tallied nine hits on the day. Kyler Semrad and Hamilton all managed multiple hits for Goddard Lions Varsity. Semrad led Goddard Lions Varsity with three hits in four at bats. Maize tallied nine hits. Johnson and Djourvic each racked up multiple hits for Maize.
