Burnsville, MN — There are so many things to talk about in this very eventful final home game for the Blaze, but in the end it ended with Burnsville on the short end of the 4-2 score against Prior Lake. It seemed like the Lakers left multiple runners on base every inning, with the Blaze finding all sorts of ways to get out of trouble to keep the score close. Prior Lake did leave 11 men on base, most of the baserunners reaching via the walk, as Burnsville pitching issued 11 free passes on the night. Burnsville only had 1 walk issued to them, which turned out to be the difference in the game. Senior Ethan Voss started for the Blaze, going 5 innings and allowing 3 runs on 5 hits, and an uncharacteristic 5 walks. None of his runs ended up being earned, as the Blaze had 3 throwing errors in the first 3 innings that led to 3 Laker runs. The Blaze relievers that followed also had trouble locating the strike zone. Owen Geegan pitched the 6th, allowing 1 run, but leaving the bases full. Blake Schmeling and Blake Widness pitched the 7th, with Widness inducing a double play grounder to Kade Bowar at shortstop to end that threat. The Burnsville offense really had a tough time getting to left hander Henry Brandt for Prior Lake. The Blaze did plate a run in the 2nd when Voss singled, Ben Meuser reached on a fielders choice, followed by a wild and somewhat controversial play. Nicholas Meuser ripped a base hit to center, where the center fielder overran the ball, allowing Ben Meuser to circle the bases, hesitating briefly at 3rd base, which made the play at the plate very close. The umpire ruled that the catcher didn't tag Meuser who did a great job hustling home and plating the first Burnsville run. The Blaze scored again in the 3rd inning, as sophomore Sean Emerson singled, took second on some heads up baserunning as the infield threw the ball away trying to get it back to the pitcher. After moving to 3rd on a wild pitch, Emerson came into score on a Jackson Kieffer sacrifice fly to centerfield. That brought the Blaze to within 3-2, and the closest they would get unfortunately. A lead off double by Asher Giese in the 6th was promising, but he was stranded there on 2nd base. It must be noted that the corner infielders and brothers Ben and Nick Meuser were big bright spots on defense all night long. Younger bro Nick made a back handed stab of a sharp grounder at third base and fired to big bro on a hop to get the runner at first. Ben made multiple plays that drew gasps then cheers from the biggest (and loudest) crowd of the season at Alimagnet. He grabbed a pop foul right off the fence top to end the 6th, and swooped in to catch a popped up bunt attempt in the 7th, thwarting Laker rallies both times. The Blaze offense had 5 hits on the night, one each from Emerson, Nick Meuser, Voss, Connor Quimby and Giese. Burnsville (6-12) will travel to Shakopee for another night game, a 7:00 start at Joe Schleper Stadium.
