Shakopee, MN — The Blaze jumped out to a 7-0 lead on Shakopee and then held on for an 8-6 victory on the road on a rainy and humid afternoon at beautiful Joe Schleper Stadium. The win now makes the Blaze 6-2 in their last 8 games, and they seem to be peaking at the right time for sections coming up in about 12 days. The scoring started in the 2nd inning on a lead off single by senior DH Jordon Sieben who moved to 2nd on the overthrow from short. After Kade Bowar's groundout moved Sieben over to 3rd, senior Ethan Voss knocked Siebs in with a base hit past the drawn in infield. Voss then stole 2nd and scored when sophomore Nicholas Meuser reached on an infield hit. The big Blaze inning was in the 4th, as Ethan Voss tripled to right, Ben Meuser walked, and Nick Meuser hit a grounder to third, but the throw home was in the dirt which allowed Voss to score. Conner Quimby was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Jackson Kieffer walked to bring in a run. The big hit came with 2 outs as junior right fielder Jonah Dawson crushed a double to the left field fence to score all 3 runs, and make the score 7-0. The black and gold added 1 more run in the 5th as Voss doubled and scored on a Ben Meuser line drive base hit to left. The 8 runs on 10 hits proved to be just enough to outscore a talented Shakopee offense. Senior Cole Voss started and earned his 3rd win on the mound as he went 6 innings, giving up 6 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits, 3 walks, and struck out 2. Nicholas Meuser was called upon to close out the game in his first varsity appearance on the mound. Nick earned the save pitching a scoreless 7th after relieving Blake Widness who had relieved Voss earlier in the inning. The Sabres scored 2 runs in each the 6th and 7th innings, but their rally came up just short. A couple of Blaze senior co-captains stood out on defense tonight. The first, Jackson Kieffer, threw out 2 runners on the bases. The pickoff he made in the bottom of the 7th inning really helped seal the win as he picked the runner off of 2nd base with nobody out and the tying run on first base. He has been outstanding behind the plate all year. The other standout was Kade Bowar at shortstop, who made numerous plays, including a double play in the 3rd inning and was on the receiving end of Kieffer's great throws to nab runners and thwart rallies. Ethan Voss led the offense going 3 for 4 with 3 runs, an RBI, a double, a triple, and stole a base. He raised his team leading batting average to .431. Dawson was 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI, Kieffer was 1 for 3 with a double, run, RBI and walk, Ben Meuser was 1 for 2 with a run, RBI and walk, Nick Meuser was 1 for 3 with a run and RBI, and Asher Giese and Sieben each had a knock. The Blaze (7-12) close out the regular season schedule tomorrow at Eagan at 5:00.
