Wichita, KS — Despite seeing its four-run lead whittled down by the end, Goddard Lions JV still held off Maize South for a 12-11 victory on Thursday. Maize South scored five runs in the failed comeback on a double by Stucky in the second, a error in the second, a walk by Reasoner in the fourth, and a walk by Foertsch in the fifth. Goddard Lions JV earned the victory despite allowing Maize South to score six runs in the first inning. Stucky, Maldonado, Kurth, and Mceachern all moved runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning. Maize South took an early lead in the first inning when Mceachern singled on a 1-0 count, scoring two runs. After Goddard Lions JV scored one run in the top of the fifth, Maize South answered with one of their own. Goddard Lions JV scored when Kaden Bethel's sac fly scored one run for Goddard Lions JV. Maize South then answered when Foertsch drew a walk, scoring one run. Goddard Lions JV took the lead for good with six runs in the second inning. In the second Carter Clyne's sac fly scored one run for Goddard Lions JV, Bethel tripled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run, an error scored one run for Goddard Lions JV, Branden Means doubled on a 0-2 count, scoring one run, and Gage Bowker singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run. Nick Rogers was the winning pitcher for Goddard Lions JV. The righty surrendered nine runs on six hits over two and two-thirds innings, striking out two. Kyle Bailey and Means entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief. Smith took the loss for Maize South.
