Varsity Football: Adams Highlanders vs. West Bloomfield Lakers Final score: Adams 35 – West Bloomfield 17 The Highlanders begin the season on the road, taking on the defending state champions at West Bloomfield High School. Highlanders begin on offense with Joey Shallow receiving the kick. Griffin Henke goes up the middle for a first down on the first play. Later in the drive, on third and five, QB Parker Picot picks up a critical down. He rolls out to pass but keeps the ball himself to earn a first down at the 45-yard line. After another first-down conversion at the 32, W. Bloomfield takes over on a fumble. On defense, Rocco Orsini and Marco DiCresce make big tackles. On second down, the Lakers QB bobbles the snap and is tackled by DiCresce. On third and short, an impressive tackle by Henke and Alex DeGrieck sets up a fourth down. The Lakers go for it, but Orsini stops them for no gain and a turnover on downs. The Highlanders return to offense at the 44-yard line. Henke makes a big gain and another first down to set up second and short. A penalty on the Lakers gives Adams the first down. Henke advances for another five-yard run. Picot on a keeper gets it inside the 20 for another first down to set up first and ten from the 15-yard line. The Lakers are tackled at the 15 by Rouse. There is no gain on first down thanks to tackles by Brady Prieskorn and Paterra. A long pass on second down is broken up by Joey Shallow. Third down brought a quarterback sack by Henke. After a penalty, the Lakers punt out of their own end zone. The fair catch by Schomer puts the Highlanders at the 50-yard line. An 8-yard gain is made by Shallow on first down and a 3-yard gain from Henke brings up another first down. After a few advances, the Highlanders face third and short from the 20-yard line. Picot’s pass attempt to Prieskorn is incomplete, but a pass interference call sets up AHS for first and goal from the 9-yard line. With third and goal from the 10-yard line, Picot’s pass is complete to Prieskorn for a Highlanders TD. Timko’s extra point is good. Adams 21 – West Bloomfield 7 A short kick to the sideline by Timko is recovered by DiCresce who manages to stay in bounds, giving the Highlanders a first and ten opportunity from the 35-yard line. The offense recovers its own fumble. With time ticking down, Picot completes a long pass to Shallow bringing the ball to the 6-yard line. The clock expires to end the half. AHS kicks off to start the second half. The ball is fielded at the 5 and returned to the 31-yard line. A big gain on the first down is stopped by Paterra. West Bloomfield manages to advance to the 30-yard line. After a 10-yard gain, Paterra causes a fumble, which is recovered by the Lakers at the 13-yard line. Parker Picot makes a tackle and the ball advances inside the 10. A second-down penalty negates a Lakers TD and backs them up to our 14-yard line. There is impressive pressure from DeGrieck and Picot and a pass to the end zone is knocked down by DiCresce. A Lakers third-down pass is complete. West Bloomfield is knocked out of bounds by Shallow and DiCresce to limit the Lakers to a 24-yard field goal attempt. The field goal is good. Adams 21 – West Bloomfield 10 The kick goes out of bounds and the Highlanders begin at the 35-yard line where they embark on a long scoring drive. After a short gain and penalty on an incomplete pass, Adams faced second and long from our 26-yard line. Picot picks up 12 yards to a manageable third down and gets to the 43-yard line to set up fourth and short. He picks up the first down to begin first and ten at the 47. A pickup of 5 yards by Shallow gets us across the 50. With second down from their 48, a short gain is made by Picot bringing up third down from their 46. Schomer picks up a great first down with 4:46 left in the third quarter and the Highlanders at the 40-yard line. Gains by Henke set up third and three. An 8-yard gain by Picot makes it first and ten from the 22-yard line. Picot gets it inside the five to set up first and goal with the clock still ticking. Adams 28 – West Bloomfield 10 West Bloomfield returns the kick to the 47-yard line. The Lakers are tackled by a host of Highlanders including DJ Greer. There is an incomplete pass on first down with coverage by Shallow to end the third quarter. Following a second-down pass and short run, West Bloomfield faces first and ten from the 42-yard line. Highlights include good tackles by Orsini and Henke and a quarterback sack by Max Cibor. On second down, the Lakers complete a long TD pass. Adams 28 – West Bloomfield 17 Adams receives the ball and DJ Greer returns the kick to the 35-yard line. Highlanders start their second long drive of the half. There is a strong gain by Parker Picot on first down. Then Picot, on a roll-out keeper, has a big gain for the third-down conversion across the 50, setting up first and ten from the Lakers 44-yard line with 7:14 left in the game.
