About Me
Mike Mitrowski – Wrestling Coach & Competitor Mike Mitrowski is a seasoned wrestling coach and accomplished athlete with a lifelong dedication to the sport. A graduate of Sparta High School in New Jersey, Mike earned All-Area honors in football and was a key member of Sparta’s first Division 2 State Championship team. He also excelled in wrestling, earning First Team All-Conference honors and qualifying for the New Jersey state championships. Mike continued his athletic career at the University of Massachusetts, where he competed in NCAA Division I wrestling. He placed 3rd in the New England Championships as a freshman and claimed the title as a junior. His academic excellence earned him Academic All-American honors in his senior year. Post-college, Mike represented the New York Athletic Club in seven USA Wrestling National Championships. He won the USA Wrestling Masters National Championship in 2000 and competed in four Masters World Championships in freestyle wrestling across Bulgaria, Germany, Switzerland, and Greece. He also represented the U.S. in Greco-Roman wrestling, contributing to only the third American team to win the Greco-Roman Team World Championship—a historic achievement commemorated in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Mike’s coaching career spans over three decades. From 1990 to 2002, he served as assistant coach at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), helping produce 13 NCAA Division III All-Americans and contributing to two New England Team Championships. At MIT (2002–2013), Mike coached 17 All-Americans, two National Champions, and a Rhodes Scholar, playing a pivotal role in MIT’s first and second team National Championships in 2010 and 2013. As head coach at St. John’s High School, Mike led the program to its first undefeated dual meet season in 2014 and coached the school’s first high school All-American, Peter Robinson, who placed 4th nationally. Mike also competes in Brazilian Ju Jitsu and is an 8 time IBJJF World Champion. Mike also competed in Mixed Martial Arts and Boxing as well. In 2020, Mike and his wife Marlene relocated from Boston to Laguna Niguel, continuing his commitment to mentoring athletes and growing the sport of wrestling.
