The JSerra Boys Basketball team can now lay claim to defeating Mater Dei twice in the same season for the first time in school history, as the Lions defeated the Monarchs 67-59 in Pool B action in the CIF-SS Open Division Playoffs Tuesday night at Mater Dei High.
In earning their first victory at Mater Dei in school history, the Lions improved to 25-5 and evened their Pool B record to 1-1.
JSerra will close out pool play with a road game Friday against St. Pius X-St. Matthias.
The Lions defense came up huge in the second and third quarters, limiting the Monarchs to 18 total points in the two quarters, as JSerra took a 15-point lead into the fourth quarter.
The Monarchs battled their way back into the game, cutting the deficit to six points late in the fourth quarter, but the Lions held off the late rally and closed out the win.
Senior Sebastian Rancik scored 11 of his team-high 21 points in the fourth quarter.
Senior Aidan Fowler added 18 points.
