Smothering defense and an aggressive offense provided the spark for the JSerra Boys Lacrosse team to open the postseason with a resounding 13-3 triumph over Aliso Niguel in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs Wednesday evening at Aliso Niguel High. Junior Gabriel Seldow and sophomore Mason Stephens each scored twice in the first half, as the Lions surged to a 6-1 halftime advantage. Senior Jack Zimmer, sophomore Doug Lorimer, and senior Shea Stephens helped spearhead a Lions’ defensive effort that was equally as impressive, as they limited the Wolverines to only one goal in the first half and few quality scoring opportunities. Mason Stephens continued his strong attacking play in the second half, scoring four of the team’s seven goals to finish with a team-high six goals. Seldow finished with three goals, while senior Jared Referente added two goals. Sophomores Cob Sprague and Asher Stevenson each added a goal. JSerra (17-2) will travel to Foothill High School on Friday night for a second-round game against the Knights.
