The JSerra Girls Water Polo team returns to the CIF-SS Championships for a third consecutive year (in a third different division), as the Lions held off the San Clemente Tritons 9-8 in the semifinals of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs Wednesday evening at Capistrano Valley High. After finishing runner-up in Division 5 in 2022 and winning the CIF-SS Division 3 title last season, JSerra (19-8) will look to claim Division 1’s top prize on Saturday, when they take on Corona del Mar. The championship game is scheduled to take place at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut at a time that will be determined on Thursday. The Lions scored the first two goals of the game, but the Tritons answered with three straight to close the period and take a 3-2 lead. JSerra outscored San Clemente 3-1 in the second period to lead 5-4 at the intermission. The Tritons matched all four of the Lions’ second half scores, but JSerra held on for the victory. Senior Zoe Gabriel and sophomore Sloane Paulson continued their strong seasons, scoring three goals for the Lions. Sophomore Kamryn McCord, junior Payton Netherton, and freshman Victoria Williams each added a goal apiece.
