The JSerra Girls Water Polo team won its third consecutive game to start the season, as the Lions produced a come-from-behind 8-6 victory over the Harvard-Westlake Wolverines in a nonleague contest at JSerra Catholic High School.
After junior Sayre Duran tallied the game-tying goal with 4:23 left in the first period, the Wolverines forged a 3-1 with two goals in a 1:04 span.
But the Lions knotted the game with two goals in the final 2:01 of the period, as juniors Sloane Paulson and Kamryn McCord each produced scoring strikes.
McCord’s second goal of the game 53 seconds into the second period put the Lions ahead 4-3.
JSerra added to the advantage with two more goals, as junior Gabby Elbaz lobbed a touch shot over the head of the Wolverines goalie and into the goal, while senior Mary O’Hara also found the back of the net.
Senior goalie Lola Birdsall helped the Lions take a two-goal lead into the intermission with two big saves in the final 2:30 of the half, including a clutch penalty shot block.
Duran’s second goal of the game helped maintain a two-goal lead for the Lions heading into the fourth period.
Harvard-Westlake cut the margin to one goal with 4:22 left in the game, but another big save from Birdsall prevented the tying goal with 3:46 remaining.
McCord completed her hat trick with a huge insurance goal with 2:14 remaining, as she converted a transition opportunity started by Birdsall and assisted by Elbaz.
