The season debut for the JSerra Boys Volleyball team could not have been a more successful one, as the Lions posted a perfect 5-0 record and won the Gold Division title at the Portola Tournament Saturday at Portola High.
JSerra opened their run with two-set sweeps of both Tustin (25-9, 25-13) and 2023 CIF-SS Division 4 runner-up El Dorado (25-17, 25-19).
The Lions dropped their first set of the tournament to host Portola in the quarterfinals (17-25), but rallied to win the next two sets (25-14, 15-6) to advance to the semifinals.
JSerra went head-to-head with defending Division 2 champion Upland in the semifinals, and after splitting the first two sets (25-23, 19-25), the teams battled in hard in the deciding third set before the Lions pulled out a 15-12 triumph to advance to the title game.
They completed their undefeated run with a sweep of Los Alamitos (25-19, 25-15).
UCLA-bound senior Trent Taliaferro produced a team-leading 34 kills in the tournament, while senior Cormac Olsom and junior Kieran Dumain each produced 26.
