Harbor Springs, MI — Monday February 26th was the State Finals for Division 2 Skiing at Nubs Nob. Caledonia's DJ Potgeter qualified and raced representing Caledonia. "We are extremely proud of DJ, he has really worked hard and focused on improving his skill set all season. DJ is the first Caledonia skier to compete in the State Finals since 2020, and he really skied hard on some of Michigan's most challenging courses on Monday." Coach Petrosky "The state changed the qualification process a couple years ago to allow a skier that qualified in one discipline to compete in both at the Finals, which was not the case the last time we had a skier here. DJ qualified by placing 10th in slalom at our Regional, which put him in flight 4.5 for slalom and 6.5 for GS. Both are challenging placements, since the snow can change and ruts can form as more and more racers run the course. DJ skied well in the morning in GS and ended up 49th in a very tough field of skiers. In the afternoon, his first slalom run had him in 32nd place going into his second run. The second run was an extremely steep and tight set and he skied the top half very well, as he was skiing over the steep transition area his ski hit a gate and popped off ending his run." "This was the most challenging slalom course that I have seen in my years of coaching and DJ really skied it hard. Ski racing is one of the most unforgiving sports, one centimeter off on a line and you can lose a ski to hit the wrong area of the line on a course with no way to redo or recover. I was impressed by how DJ handled the loss of his ski and his immediate focus on what to do so he can return to the finals, with his team next year. He is the kind of athlete that coaches want on their team to lead the way for their team's improvement." Caledonia's season is now done. The boys team ended up 2nd in the LMSC and the Girls team was 3rd. The Girls Team was 5th in the Michigan High School Ski Coaches Association's Academic standings.
