Vista, CA — Vista, CA Behind a stout defense and an offense that showed promise, power and first game jitters. The Vista 12U Longhorns defeated Temecula Attacking Bears by a score of 12-0. Vista recovered the opening kick, which was an onside attempt by Temecula. With good field position the Longhorn's initial drive ended with a Temecula interception of the Vista offense. The interception proved to not be too costly as Vista's defense was about to set a tone that would be consistent throughout the game. Temecula, facing a 4th and 27, lined up in punt formation. The snap sailed over the punters head and was chased down and recovered by Vista. The miscue put the Longhorns in scoring position for the second time in the first quarter. On first down the Longhorns ran a QB bootleg around the left side for 11 yards. On the next play Vista's running back scampered around the right side for Vista's first score of the year. The score would not have been possible without key blocks by Vista's 2-back and powerful offensive line. With a lead of 6-0, Vista's defense went back to work making life difficult for the Temecula offense. On the day the Vista defense held the Attacking bears to 4 first downs and produced 7 tackles for loss, (TFL), a fumble recovery and an interception. Vista's defense played well on each level. The front four made outstanding and disruptive penetration through-out the day. Their play enabled the linebackers to flow freely to the ball with decisiveness and determination. Couple that with the closing speed of the defensive backs, the defense made sure to contain the Attacking Bears on the few positive plays they were able to muster. The Attacking Bears Coach complimented the Vista squad with being the more disciplined and physical team. His offense, blessed with talented skill players, was stymied by the stingy defense time and time again. The game remained 6-0 until midway through the 4th quarter, when Vista turned another Temecula miscue into points. Vista's offense used a number of different offensive alignments to keep the Attacking Bears off balance for the key drive of the game. The lack of balance allowed the offensive line of the Longhorns to take control of a tired Attacking Bears defense. As a result, Vista was able to seal the game with a QB sneak with just under 5 minutes remaining in the contest. With the win the Longhorns improve to 1-0 and should be tested in 2 weeks when the Poway Raiders visit. The Raiders, coming off an impressive win by a score of 33-6 over the Santee Ravens (Purple), brings a potent offense to challenge a stingy and disciplined defense. Which one will prevail?
