Vista, CA — On a gloomy Saturday afternoon in Vista, the Longhorns fell to 2-2 on the season with a 31-3 loss to the now 3-1 San Marcos Knights. Vista fought but did not have a way of dealing with a much larger and skilled San Marcos Knights squad. Speaking of which, the size disparity of the two teams was astonishing. The fact that Vista was able to stay in the game for a half says a lot about the fortitude of the Horns. A game that started very promising, turned into a 2nd half nightmare for the Vista Longhorns. The Horns were coming off a thrilling victory over the Santee Ravens (3-1) last weekend. That emotion carried over for a half for the scrappy Horns. Unfortunately, the game consists of more than one half. Vista caused an early turnover on the Knights 2nd play from scrimmage. After a short drive to the Knights 20, Vista kicked a 37-yard field goal which resulted in a 3-0 lead. A lead Vista was able to hold for the balance of the quarter and much of the 2nd quarter. The teams traded possessions as quarter two progressed before San Marcos answered to take a 6-3 lead. The Longhorns were hanging tough, but could they continue to do so against the physical San Marcos team? The Knights put together a 5 play 62-yard drive just before the half which seemed to deflate the young Horns. With seconds to go before the half, the Knights were able to cap the drive with .8 seconds remaining to take a 12-3. And as a result, control of the game. The second half was a long half for Vista as the skilled Knights took advantage of several Longhorn miscues. Vista will try to re-group for next week's contest against the Rancho Hills Titans Blue. The Titans are 2-2 on the season and are looking to right their ship. Both teams need a win to keep pace with the leading teams in the division. Until then, Deeh Nice Longhorn Beat Writer
