Hazleton, PA — From the Standard Speaker Kaitlyn Bindas was still attending Valley Elementary-Middle School when Williamsport eliminated Hazleton Area from the District 2/4 Class 6A girls’ basketball playoffs last February. Now a freshman dynamo for the Lady Cougars, she made an immediate impact in the teams’ rematch Tuesday evening at Hughie McGeehan Gymnasium. Bindas scored a career-high 24 points, including 10 in the first quarter and 20 in the opening half, to spark the Lady Cougars to a 67-34 non-league rout of the visiting Millionaires. “We stunned them a little bit,” winning coach Joe Gavio understated afterward. Taking advantage of 10 Williamsport turnovers in the first quarter, Hazleton Area jumped out to an early double-digit lead and didn’t take its foot off the accelerator in winning for the fourth time in five games. Bindas drained two 3-pointers and two deuces in both the first and second quarters to show the way. Kayla Lagowy added five, Alexis Reimold contributed four and Olivia Williams swished a triple in the former. Remold, Sophia Benyo and Jayla Eberts tossed in four apiece in the latter, as the Lady Cougars’ lead swelled to 46-20 by halftime. “Today it was just a great game for us,” Gavio said. “Hopefully, we keep it going.” Lagowy finished with 13 points and Reimold wound with eight for the Lady Cougars. Payton Baney was the lone Millionaire in double figures with 16 points.
