Amsterdam, NY — Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake JV Spartans beat Amsterdam 6-5 on Monday after taking the lead late in the game. The game was tied at five in the top of the eighth when Sam Pezzolesi singled, scoring one run. The Spartans opened the scoring in the top of the first thanks to two ground outs.Charlie Venditti opened the game with a single, then came around the bases to score when Anthony Canarelli grounded out. Tucker Sunkes also singled in the inning, coming around the bases and scoring on a passed ball. The Spartans added another run in the third. Sunkes walked, then stole 2nd and third before Josh Darcy singled, driving him in, making the score 3-1. Amsterdam tied the game up in the bottom of the third thanks to two singles. In the top of the fifth, The Spartans broke up the tie when Darcy hit into a fielder's choice, driving in Sunkes with the go-ahead run. Then a steal of home,on a passed ball, by Matt Broker followed later in the inning to extend the lead to 5-3. Amsterdam tied the game in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a walk by #9, and a single by #20. After the game went into extra innings tied at 5, Josh Darcy got on base on an error by the Amsterdam third baseman, ending up at second base with no outs. Riley Murphy came in to pinch run for Darcy, eventually being driven in for the go-ahead run on a single by Sam Pezzolesi. Adam Yerina started the game for The Spartans. The starting pitcher allowed five hits and three runs (two earned) over four and two-thirds innings, striking out seven and walking three. Karl LaFountain and Tucker Sunkes each appeared in relief for Burnt Hills. Darcy provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led The Spartans with two runs batted in. The right-handed hitter went 1-for-3 on the day. Charlie Venditti, Arthur Bowcutt, Darcy, Pezzolesi, and Sunkes each collected one hit for Burnt Hills. Pezzolesi and Sunkes each stole multiple bases for Burnt Hills as The Spartans stole seven bases in the game. Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake JV Spartans play at home (at Indian Meadows) on Tuesday against Christian Brothers Academy Brothers JV in their next game.
