Recap
Fullerton, CA — The Laguna Beach Breakers football team opened their Delta League conference play with a road game against the Troy Warriors.
Laguna started their first possession at the 16 yard line, but after a holding penalty had the ball on the 9 yard line. On third and 14 Jack Hurst was hit as he threw leading to an interception that the Warriors ran back to the Laguna 9 yard line.
However, the worst part of the play was a knee injury to Jack Hurst.
The defense denied the Warriors a touchdown and on fourth down Xavier Brooks broke through the line and blocked Troy‘s attempted field goal, giving the breakers possession at the 20 yard line.
With Hurst sidelined. Freshman quarterback Braden Hansen was forced into action. And with Easton Perez still out, Harry Onel, another freshman, was playing center for Laguna Beach.
Neither team was able to score in the first quarter, with Laguna stopping Troy at the Laguna 25 on the fourth down play.
On their ensuing possession, Laguna had third and long when Hansen broke off a 43 yard run to put the Breakers in the red zone. On third and goal from the 2 yard line, Hansen faked a handoff to Bobby Gardner and took the ball around the left end for the first score of the game.
On their next possession, Laguna was driving again when they had third and long and Braden Hansen found Brady Stringham for a nice pass and catch. They got the ball into the red zone again faking the ball to Bobby Gardner. Hansen took the ball again around left end to score from 8 yards out putting Laguna up 14 to nothing.
On the last play of the first half with five seconds to go, Troy threw a 43 yard Hail Mary pass and their prayers were answered as the receiver caught the ball in the end zone making the halftime score 14 to 7.
Troy took the opening kickoff and proceeded to drive the ball down to the Laguna 19 yard line, where the Breakers forced a fumble that Bobby Gardner recovered. Laguna was then forced to punt and on their next possession, the Warriors scored on a 42 yard run around the right end tying the score at 14.
The fourth quarter started with Laguna on a drive, marching the ball to the Troy 6 yard line. From there, Hansen found Will Kimball for a 6 yard touchdown pass putting Laguna back in front again.
The Defense played well again, with a big sack by Xavier Brooks. Laguna took possession at their 40 yard line and after a first down run by Bobby Gardner, they were looking at third and long when Hansen found Brady Stringham for a pass to the 1 yard line. On the next play, Bobby Gardner followed the offensive line up the middle for a 1 yard run putting Laguna Beach up by two scores.
Laguna was able to turn the Warriors away again inside the red zone, but the offense was unable to move the ball turning possession back to the Warriors. But with time winding down and now out of timeouts, Troy was forced to pass and on their third down play Colter Steris stepped in front of a would be Troy receiver to intercept the pass to finish off the game for Laguna.
Final score Laguna Beach 28, Troy 14
The Defense played outstandingly with great efforts by Xavier Brooks and another freshman Christian Hamelberg. This is the second weekend in a row that Christian has played outstandingly at tackle on the Defense for Laguna. The offensive line played wonderfully allowing Laguna to have their most rushing yards this season.
