San Pedro, CA — The Laguna Beach Breakers, coming off of a bye week, took their 1-3 record on the road to battle the undefeated San Pedro Pirates. The Pirates had scored 63 and then 49 points in their two previous games, and Laguna Beach was nursing a number of injuries most significantly to Garrett Byerly, whose ACL tear has put him out for the rest of the season. The Breakers kicked off to start the game. The Pirates had a drive going before cornerback Colter Steris intercepted a ball at the Laguna 30. 4 plays into their first possession, quarterback Jack Hurst found freshman receiver Ryder Bright on a quick out route that Ryder took for 60 yards down the right side line for the opening score for Laguna Beach. After a couple of three and out possessions by both teams, San Pedro connected on an inside screen pass they ended up going 54 yards for a touchdown to tie the score at seven. Neither team was able to mount much of a drive the rest of the first half, but on the last play of the first half, quarterback Jack Hurst hurt his left hand and had to be tended to by the trainer. Laguna got the ball to start the second half, and with Jack Hurst still nursing the pain in his left hand, freshman quarterback Braden Hansen stepped in for Laguna‘s first drive. Laguna was forced to punt but they forced a three and out by the Pirates and on the next possession quarterback Jack Hurst returned to the game. The third quarter ended with the game still tied at seven. Laguna started the fourth quarter with the ball, and on a fourth and four play Jack Hurst again found freshman receiver Ryder Bright for a critical first down pass and catch. With great blocking upfront by the offensive line of Malik Morrison, Kade Anderson, Easton Perez, Luke Bogdan, and Weston Darrow, tailback Charlie Christian was able to drive the ball down field eventually getting the ball to the Laguna 5 yard line. On third down, Jack Hurst found his favorite receiver Brady Stringham for a 5 yard touchdown pass giving Laguna the lead again 14 to 7. The Pirates started driving the ball down field trying to tie the score, when cornerback Dean Smith stepped in front of a San Pedro pass for an interception giving the ball back to Laguna. Again with a good combination of passing and running, Laguna drove the ball to the Pirates 16 yard line. On third down, Coach Shanahan called timeout to talk things over with his players and coaches. When play resumed, Jack Hurst was able to find Brady Stringham again this time for a 16 yard touchdown pass give Laguna a cushion of 21 to 7. The defense did an incredible job all night led by the front line of Xavier Brooks, Grayson Kazmouz and playing nose guard, Sokka Molteni. The linebackers Wyatt Bogdan, Bobby Gardner, James Nugent, Liam Nassour, and the defensive backfield of already mentioned Colter Steris and Dean Smith, with Wil, Kimball and Will Golden. This group held a team that had scored 112 points and their prior to games to one touchdown. The Breakers begin Delta League play next week with an opening game against Troy High School on the road.
