San Juan Capistrano, CA — Wait, who finished first today? JV or Varsity? Why? ..... first ever win over any Newport Harbor tennis team. (JV finished right at 5 pm, getting the win earlier we believe!) We have only ever played Newport in Frosh Soph girls matches for the last 12 years, coming close but never a cigar. What was “cool” about today’s JV victory was that our sophomores defeated some of the same girls that creamed us last year in two Frosh Soph matches. Why? ..... a great group of 9th graders, most of whom came up through KO’s T3 Youth Tennis program, playing along side a few seasoned juniors plus a handful of tournament tough sophomores with UTR rankings. 100% club (and MVP) honors to the two Ava’s: Zell and Serentelos who won all 3 sets played this afternoon! Great job. Going “2 for 3” kudos to our top 2 singles players: Anna Solovjev and Rosalia Ripullo; and our line 1 doubles team: Julia Harkins and Sophia Gonzalez. Hats off to our #3 doubles team: Natalie Walters and Lauren Smith. They won the first set of the afternoon 6-2 setting the tone for the the day. Early line # 3 matches in the opening round are critical in tight matches. You won’t win the close matches if your 3’s aren’t beating their 3’s. Next up: home vs Foothill on Tuesday, March 2nd, 2pm.
