In case you missed the alert from SVUSD and SVPD Nixle:

Dear Simi Valley Schools Community:

Over the next 36 hours, the Santa Ana winds are predicted to be the strongest we've seen so far this year. We've been told that there is a strong probability that Southern California Edison will shut down power to most, if not all, of Simi Valley and Moorpark. We can't yet say whether our district offices and/or our school sites will be open or not tomorrow. We will continue to monitor the power situation and weather conditions throughout the night. We will send a notification out tomorrow (Wednesday) whether we are open or closed. Notifications go out generally between 6:15 and 6:45 in the morning.

We’re asking that to the best of your ability, that you make plans for childcare and other needs in the event of a school/district closure.

Regardless of what happens in the coming days, we will communicate frequently with everyone through all of our normal channels: phone, email, app notifications, texts, school and district websites and SVUSD Facebook and Twitter pages. You can access the links for our Facebook and Twitter accounts at simivalleyusd.org.

The following are some power outage tips adapted from Pacific Gas & Electric that we've share before:

* Create a safety plan for all members of your family, including pets. A Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) can happen at any time of day or night, due to changing weather conditions.
* Prepare an emergency supply kit. Include enough water and nonperishable food to last your household one week. Be sure to refresh your kit once a year.
* Determine if your landline will work during an outage. Keep a mobile phone as backup.
* Keep mobile phones and other devices charged.
* If you have a generator, make sure it’s ready to operate safely.
* Have flashlights available for your household. Avoid using candles.
* Have a battery-powered or crank radio.
* Stock up on the right batteries for items you rely on. Include two extra sets in various sizes.
* Keep cash on hand and a full tank of gas. ATMs and gas stations may not be available during an outage.
* Learn how to manually open your garage or any other door that operates with electricity.
Talk with your building manager if you live or work in a building that has elevators or electronic key card access to understand how they will deal with a possible multi-day outage.

We understand how hard it is to plan when there are so many possibilities for the coming days, and we appreciate your patience and flexibility.

Thank you, SVUSD
