Baseball Team Heats Up Late In Season To Qualify For Conference Tournament By Andy Hutchison
Stratford, CT — Newtown High School’s baseball team kept up its winning ways on the heels of early-May victories over Notre Dame-Fairfield and Stratford as the Nighthawks defeated host Pomperaug of Southbury 7-4 on May 11, beat visiting Weston 7-3 on May 13, then shut out host Bunnell of Stratford 7-0 on May 14 to close out the regular season slate.

Baseball Team Rallies To Edge New Milford As Part Of Successful Stretch By Andy Hutchison
Newtown, CT — Newtown High School’s baseball team got back into the win column with its second nail-biter against New Milford this spring. The Nighthawks went on the road and edged the Green Wave 3-2 on May 1; the Hawks won 5-4 in a matchup at home earlier this spring.

Sandy Hook, CT — Newtown High School’s baseball team came from behind twice in as many games to post its first two wins of the campaign. The Nighthawks clawed back from a two-run deficit with six runs in the final three innings to defeat host Bethel 7-3 on April 11, then overcame a 4-0 deficit to edge visiting New Milford 5-4 on April 16.

One-Run Wonders: Nighthawk Sluggers Battle In 11 Nail-Biters During Regular Slate (By Andy Hutchison of The Newtown Bee)
Monroe, CT — If you were looking for a little suspense this spring the Newtown High School baseball diamond, or whatever field the Nighthawk sluggers were visiting, was the place to be. Among 20 regular-season games were 11 decided by a single run — including the Nighthawks’ last three, and four of their final five matchups heading into the postseason. Newtown went 6-5 in those nail-biters and posted a 13-7 overall mark and earned the No. 4 seed and a conference tournament quarterfinal-round home game.

Sandy Hook, CT — Playing six games in nine days can take a toll on a pitching staff, but consecutive combined shutouts, and three such dominant pitching outcomes during this stretch, by Newtown High School’s hurlers gave the Nighthawks a spark and helped them pull out a couple of hard-fought victories and one blowout win against South-West Conference rivals on the baseball diamonds.
