Medford, OR — Before we even started warmups our team discussed the importance of what we focus on, what we put our attention on. Philippians 4 reminds us about the peace we experience when our thoughts are on love, thankfulness, what's right and pure. From the first whistle the Challenger ladies were committed to a sound mind that included these things and the mental and physical alertness our coaches have taught them. From the great link up plays and passes, to effective team communication, to the defensive efforts to shut down Coquille, and aggressive attacking moves to create chances and score on goal; the ladies truly played their best as a united team. In the 10th minute, after successfully playing in three different cut-back passes that were shots on goal, we won a corner from a deflected ball. Aubrey Hess's cross was placed into the box to our waiting Challengers who managed to kick it through traffic and Jordynn Jones found the back of the net. For the next 15 minutes the Challengers controlled the game, stopping counter attack breakaways and having chance after chance on goal. After one defensive play, we countered sending the ball to Taylor Folin on the wing, who found Jordynn Jones making a cut up the field. Another cut back pass through two defenders gave Jones the assist as Angelica Arce was positioned perfectly for the shot and goal. Nearly 5 minutes later Mae Ferreira supported the passage of play and found a straight through ball up the middle to a cutting Aubrey Hess who scored our third goal. Then five minutes later, again while keeping possession Aubrey Hess played a double give and go with Center Forward Angelica Arce, who received a cut-back pass from Hess and slotted it past the keeper taking us to 4-0. A few minutes later, a bobbled free-kick from Coquille was unable to be cleared in our box and Coquille managed to get a foot on it past Josie Scaglione for their only goal of the day. In the second half we continued to see what our girls committed to from the start of the game. They kept Coquille from scoring any goals in the second half and put away two more. The first was a great team worked play that gave Maddie Winters the assist as she fed Jones for a beautiful top corner shot. The second was another Winters assist who received it from Freshman Gwen Vanwart in the forward position, and found Hess who scored her 2nd. We had outstanding defensive efforts from leaders Mae Ferreira, Amelia Vanlandingham, and Maddie Winters, as well as great D work from Brynn Coppedge and Ryann DeBoer. Jones accrued 2 goals and 1 assists, Hess had 2 goals and 2 assists, Arce had 2 goals, Ferriera had 1 assist, and Winters had 2 assists. The Challenger ladies plan on building on this momentum for Thursday's game @Douglas, which will fuel us for the hardest triple header week of the season in early October against North Valley, Sutherlin and St. Mary's.
