Varsity team loses to Jackson 44-39
Waverly battled hard at home against Jackson but came up just short in a competitive 44-39 loss. Despite the setback, the team showed tremendous heart and resilience throughout the contest, keeping their record at 9-8 for the season. The game featured multiple lead changes and exciting momentum swings that kept fans on the edge of their seats. The contest got off to a back-and-forth start with both teams trading baskets early. Kage Alexander got Waverly going with consistent scoring in the first quarter, putting up 6 points, while Sawyer Myers opened the game with the first basket. However, Jackson closed the quarter strong with a 7-point scoring streak, including a three-pointer, to take a 15-8 advantage into the second period. Waverly showed incredible fight in the second quarter, with Alexander continuing his stellar play by adding 6 more points through aggressive drives to the basket and solid free throw shooting. The team's best moment came when Landyn Russell connected on a crucial two-pointer to give Waverly a brief 16-15 lead. The third quarter saw Sawyer Myers step up as the top scorer with 5 points, showcasing excellent shooting efficiency, while Davion McBride knocked down a clutch three-pointer to keep the team within striking distance. The fourth quarter was pure drama as Waverly made one final push. Alexander and Russell combined for key baskets to tie the game at 33-33, and Alexander's free throws even gave Waverly a 34-33 lead. Alexander finished with an outstanding 19 points on efficient 5-11 shooting and nearly perfect 9-10 free throw shooting (90%). Sawyer Myers contributed 7 points on impressive 3-4 field goal shooting (75%), while Gunnar Myers added 6 points including a late three-pointer. Though Jackson pulled away in the final minutes, Waverly's effort and determination throughout the game showed the character this team possesses as they continue their season.
