Parents, as I was talking to Terry I realized that with so many new parents, some of you may not totally understand some of the things I do or call on gameday. I will explain a couple of them that might have caused confusion. Although, I want you all to know everything I do out there has a reason and none of my decisions are random.

35 point rule. The conference has a mercy rule that no game should be won my more than 35 points. There are some give and take here, but as a general rule any coach who “runs up the score” and wins by more than 35 is subject to a fine. With a second offense resulting in a suspension. So, when it looks like I am trying not to score, I’m not!! It really would not look good if the conference president violated this rule.

PAT’s, or points after touchdowns. In youth football, the conversion is only worth 1 point and kicking is worth two. This is the opposite of high school and up. This is because at our age it is much easier to convert a PAT than kick it. In fact, being able to complete a kick PAT is really rare and unusual. However, I will try because of the 2 points as opposed to one. Especially against a weak opponent. So, if you don’t know why I kept trying yesterday, it’s because I knew we were going to win and if we can dial that in it may be big later in the year.

Mandatory play rule. With the number of players we have in the roster, each player is guaranteed and required to play 6 plays. Special teams do not count. When we are winning and the game is really not in question, I will get the non-starters as much time as possible. Full disclosed, in tight games some of the players will only be getting their 6. Just know, I will do everything I can to get them more, but as I explained in our parent meeting, tackle football is more of a club type sport than an AYSO where everyone plays equally.

Also, I want to reiterate that sometimes I yell and get on your kids. It’s all calculated and intentionally. No matter what it looks like, because I am trying to achieve a desired result!! I am not a person who loses control As an example, when I got into one of the players yesterday for a illegal hit on the interception return. It was for two reasons
1. It was a selfish move 20 yards behind the ball carrier. Although I appreciate the desire to be physical, I don’t encourage cheap shots (it was a blindside) and I wanted to show how serious it is, so that players and others learns so it won’t happen again. That is a penalty in every league and could have resulted in an ejection.
2. I wanted the referees and the other coaching staff to know we do not teach that and I was dealing with it. This prevents cheap shots against our players and may sway the ref not to eject, because I was handling it.

Anyway, I know this was a long message. Just want everyone to understand why and how I do some things. See you all Tuesday.. coach Chuck
