Jaime Moreno will go from behind the scenes to front and center for the Oxnard High football team.
Moreno, the school’s interim athletic director, performed grade checks, processed paperwork and made sure the players were making it to class during last year’s Pacific View League championship and CIF-Southern Section Division 6 finalist season.
“Behind-the-scenes kind of stuff,” Moreno said.

Now he takes over the Yellowjackets’ league title defense.
Oxnard hired Moreno as its head football coach, principal Richard Urias announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Moreno, who coached under Will Cowen and Donnie Rea at Pacifica High and under Mark Beckham and Jon Mack at Oxnard High, fills the void left by Mack’s resignation in January.
“The biggest thing is to continue the success that we’ve had,” Moreno said. “We’ve been a successful program. I want to continue that tradition.”

Moreno, 46, has played and coached for some of the most successful coaches in school history. He started at guard and played middle linebacker at Oxnard High for Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame coach Jack Davis, graduating in 1990
Oxnard High Principal Richard Urias described Moreno as a committed and diligent Yellowjacket.

“In Jaime, we’re getting an Oxnard High School guy who’s very committed to our school, our kids and our community,” Urias said. “That really means a lot to me as a principal.”
“I also believe he’s someone who can put together a strong staff at all three levels and continue our winning tradition.”
Oxnard was 11-3 a year ago, outscoring PVL opponents 198-28 and reaching its first section final in 90 years. It fell to West Covina-South Hills, 23-14, in the Division 6 final.

In hopes of continuing that run, Moreno planned to meet with the rest of the staff Tuesday night and offer them positions on his staff.
“The first plan is to talk to the guys who are here right now and give them the opportunity,” Moreno said. “There’s plenty of experience on this staff. … I’ve had a great professional relationship with all of them.”

Offensive coordinator Tim Gutierrez, receivers coach Kekoa Walea and co-defensive coordinator Nathan Page both confirmed to The Star on Tuesday that they expect to remain with the program.
“I don’t know that Jaime’s intention was to be the permanent AD,” Urias said. “He stepped in to fill the void because we needed someone and he wanted to support the coaches and the players.”
